Last month, I shared that my brother and sister-in-law’s gift to the boys for Christmas was a crate from KiwiCo. They had such a blast with their first crate, that they were STOKED when the second one arrived this week. Subscription boxes are really taking off in popularity, and now you can find one for just about every kind of product out there.
We were so excited about Kiwi Co’s boxes because getting to try something new every month is really fun, and kids absolutely love to get new things in the mail. The first box was such a hit. Would the second one live up to the hype?
If you have been looking for something fun and different to try with your kids at home, KiwiCo offers a STEM-Based subscription crate for every age group. If you use my link below, you can save 30% using the Promo Code: Share30.
The boys receive two boxes: the Kiwi Crate for Luke (ages 5+) and the Tinker Crate for Landry (ages 9+). They arrived during the week, but between activities and homework, we didn’t actually have time to work on them until Saturday. I’m glad we waited too, because it ended up being 22 degrees that day (which shuts down the entire state of Texas), so we really needed a good indoor activity to occupy us for the afternoon! We lit a fire in the fireplace, cozied up next to it and got to work!
We started with Luke’s Kiwi Crate first! He was so excited to open it up and see what was inside!
We opened it up to find, once agian, a fun little comic book to read, the directions for the activities and all of the pieces we needed, neatly organized in bags. We saw that his box contained two activities this month: one craft and one game! Luke decided he wanted to start with the craft.
The craft was to make some cute little flowers in a frame to learn about Capillary Action. We started by setting up our surfacing, using a scratch piece of paper under the frame & plastic backing. The box even gives you extra supplies like sticky tape in case you mess up or decide to do a few more!
We found a little envelope with green string for stems and white flowers. Luke chose these 3 shapes for his first round, and has extras to make some more later!
Next, we found some binder clips and used them to hold the two sides of the plastic frame together and stand them up over the paint pots. We made sure each stem has enough room out of the bottom to dip into a paint pot!
The box contained red and yellow paint drops. Luke decided to make one red, one yellow, and mix them in the middle for orange!
He was shocked when he looked up from putting in the last of his drops to see that the yellow flower was already complete! How did it do that?!?!?
We learned that the paint travels up the flower stems through Capillary Action. Certain things, like liquid, can defy gravity and travel up if it has the right object to use! We also determined that the next time, we need to use more yellow and less red on our orange flower, haha!
Next up, we started constructing the Tilting Tree Game. We started by assembling the tree’s trunk on the base with a little bit sticking out the bottom to make it wobbly.
We used a rubber band to hold the base and trunk together.
Once the tree trunk was flipped over, we could start the Tilting Tree game! The object was to build your tree, using the dice to determine if you were adding leaves or roots or if you tree would fall victim to a natural disaster!
Each roll was coded with a colored number. Inside the box directions, the numbers symbolized what section you added roots or leaves in, or what natural disaster your tree would have to live through.
Luke loved the natural disasters because you could either blow on the tree (Big Bad Wolf Style) for a hurricane or shake the table for an earthquake!
Landry’s box was up next. We were going to be making a Color Mixing LED Crystal. I am not going to lie, this one made me a little nervous. If anyone was going to manage to get electrocuted by a kids STEM kit, it would be me!
Luckily, once again, the instructions were so easy that even I could figure it out!
The base came already put together with a really easy guide printed inside so Landry was able to figure out exactly where to put the sticky foam and string wires through without my help. He only really needed my help when it came to looping the wire ends through the brads because his little fingers just did not want to cooperate with that part.
It took him no time to figure out which wires went to which section! I was still reading the directions when I looked over and saw this! Each of the red, green & blue wires hooked onto a
The box even included batteries for the battery pack! He had everything plugged in and just needed to put the final yellow wire into the LED bulb right in the middle of the red and green wires!
Once all the wires were in place, Landry flipped the crystal base over, and turned on the switch and was so excited to see that it worked!
Landry figured out really quickly that the three switches could be used to change the colors of the LED bulb inside the crystal! He was able to make it blue, green, red, purple, orange, or even white!
This was such a cool way for him to learn how lights actually work, and what the different wires do! He also now has a really cool light in his room that he can use as a night light that he made himself! That’s so much better than any that I could buy at the store!
Have you tried a subscription box for your kids yet? What have you tried? Let me know in the comments!

These look like so much fun!! They both did a great job, and Landry’s face is priceless with the LED crystal! Will keep this company in mind as my granddaughters get a little older. Thank you! 🙂

I would have LOVED these when my kids were little and I was homeschooling. Now my girls are in college (Baylor, in fact) and 20 degrees is nothing to them since they are from MN! I am thinking of getting my dog a subscription box, but probably not this brand 🙂 Great post!
