What’s up, friends? If you’re reading this, you’ve probably clicked over from one of my social media spots, wondering, “Seriously, what are you doing?” Well, let me take a moment to catch you up!
I have spent most of my adult life selling new homes for builders. That ended rather abruptly a little over 2 months ago; I’ll share more about that, eventually. In the days and weeks that followed I began to realize just how much our entire world revolved around my job and how much that affected not only me but my family. I missed every weekend for almost 10 years, meaning I missed almost every soccer game, every football game, countless karate testings & tournaments, more birthday parties & social events than I can count, and so much time with family & loved ones. Right before it happened, my brother had come to town with his family, and I literally was only able to give them a matter of hours for fear of missing the next buyer! The kids were constantly competing for my attention in the little time they would get, and I couldn’t tell you what they were doing on the weekends to save my life. The schedule took a toll on my marriage as we never had a day off together unless it was a planned vacation day! We justified it, saying we only needed child care 3x per week, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have the time to connect as a couple, your marriage will fall into a funk. Once I truly realized that we had spent a decade with absolutely no real work-life balance, I set to the task of figuring out what to do next.
I’m lucky, in that I have a little bit of a cushion, so I am able to give myself a minute to be able to refocus, and put what should be my highest priority, my family, back where they belong at the top of my list! I decided it would be a bit before I went back to work full time, but the little bit would be drastically shortened if I didn’t come up with some kind of supplemental income. I started thinking about the things I really love & enjoy and those were: travel (specifically Disney), my kids, and writing!
Disney was easy! I am that girl that nerds out her Disney trips. I plan months in advance, read all the blogs, follow all the crowd calendars, keep up with all the updates, and really put a lot of effort into making sure we have the best vacation ever. My friends know this about me, so when they plan their trips, I’m always the one they hit up with questions! I have a friend that I’ve known since 5th grade who has served as my Travel Agent for years for Disney World trips. She was so sweet to share with me how she got into selling Disney Vacations and helped me get into touch with the owners of her company, Kingdom Destinations. I reached out to Jessica & Lindsey and we just clicked! I made the decision to join Kingdom Destinations where I could sell not only Disney travel but other vacations & cruises as well! I loved taking the Disney College of Knowledge courses (seriously yall, I’m a nerd), and was ready to go for my first bookings!
I created a special Facebook Page just for my travel business, and would love you to follow it! I’ll be sharing information about Disney, Universal, and other great family travel opportunities!
The next opportunity that came my way was one I actually took advantage of some time ago but didn’t really do anything with because I didn’t have time! My kids, as wild as they can be, are huge readers! We love a good story! My problem is, I hate the library. Wait, what?!?! Hear me out! I love the idea of the library, but yall, you can’t clean books! It’s not that I’m a germ freak or anything, but that’s a lot of kids, picking a lot of noses, touching those books before I get my hands on them. I find boogers in the books we own all the time but at least I know where they came from! The thought of strangers boogers just grosses me out, so I spend a ton of money on books in our house, then donate them when we have finished our adventure with it.
Another friend of mine had turned me on to Usborne Books. She was selling them, and we were buying, and loving, just about everything she showed us! They’re beautifully made books that are educational as well. When they had a great incentive to sign up, I went for it; at that time it was just for the discounts. When I realized I needed to start making money, I decided to actually launch the business! If your kiddos love to get lost in a good adventure, I would love to help you with suggestions! I set up a second Facebook Page for my Usborne business you can follow to find out about new titles and specials, and it will also link you to my online store!
Finally, I wanted to figure out what to do with my love of writing. I’ve always loved keeping a journal, and have been told for years that I should turn my Facebooks posts about the boys, our crazy adventures, my unique ability to fumble and/or break just about everything I touch, and all of the shenanigans that go along with us into a blog. Well friends, here we go! I’ve decided to go for it! My best friend, Bonnye helped me come up with the name, I found a fabulous online course that helped me learn the technical end of blogging, and the rest is history!
